life science Maturity 5-7 Next article →

Dasyuromorphia is a special group of animals. Most of them are carnivorous marsupials from Australia. This means they are meat eaters with pouches.

They play a big part in nature there. This group includes many different kinds of animals. Some are very large and some are tiny.

They are very important to study to learn about history.

These animals have different ways of moving and eating. Most of them eat meat or bugs.

They hunt small animals or arthropods like insects. Their teeth help them with this hard job. The lower molar teeth have a special shape. This shape is called carnassial-like morphology. It helps them eat meat well. Some animals like the kultarr are built to hop.

This hopping helps them move around quickly.

Scientists study how these animals are related. They use a tree called a phylogeny to show this.

This tree shows how different families connect. Researchers like Kealy and Upham have studied these links. They look at how the group changed over time. This helps us understand the history of life. It shows how one group can become many kinds.

There are four main families in this group. The Myrmecobiidae family has only one living species. This is the numbat, or Myrmecobius fasciatus.

The Thylacinidae family had the thylacine. The thylacine is now extinct. The Dasyuridae family is the largest group. It has 73 living species right now. This includes quolls, dunnarts, and the Tasmanian devil.

Finally, the Malleodectidae family is also extinct.

These animals show us how much life can change. Some members are very small like the planigale. The planigale is the smallest living marsupial.

Other members were much larger like the thylacine. You can see these differences in their bodies. Some have teeth for meat and some hop. They all belong to the same big group. It is amazing to see such variety.

This group shows how nature works in many ways.
