Anoplotheriidae were a family of extinct animals. They belonged to a group called artiodactyls. These are animals with even-toed feet. The name for this family means "unarmed beast." This name suggests they did not have weapons like horns. They lived a long time ago in Europe. This was during the Eocene and Oligocene epochs. These times were about 44 to 30 million years ago.

These animals lived in many different ways. Some were very small and some were quite large. One kind was named Diplobune minor. It likely weighed about 10 kilograms. Another kind was called Anoplotherium. This animal could weigh up to 100 kilograms.

Different species had different ways of finding food and moving. They filled many roles in their old world.

How these animals lived depended on their size. Anoplotherium was a browser. This means it ate leaves and plants. It could stand up on its back legs to reach food.

Diplobune was an arboreal animal. This means it could climb trees. These two animals used the forests in very different ways. One stayed on the ground while the other climbed.

Many scientists have studied these animals over the years. Bonaparte named them in 1850. Cope placed them in the artiodactyl group in 1889. Gregory called them ruminants in 1910. Later, Romer gave them their own group in 1966.

Scientists still learn new things about them today. New studies help us understand their family tree.

Researchers use fossils to see how they are related to others. A 2019 study said they were close to Cainotheriidae. Both of these groups lived in Europe. A 2020 study found a different link. It said they were related to Xiphodontidae. Both of these groups are relatives of ruminants. Ruminants are animals like deer or cows.
