Moonrat

life science Maturity 5-7 Next article →

The moonrat is a small mammal from Southeast Asia. It is not a rat or a rodent. It belongs to the family Erinaceidae. This is the same family as hedgehogs.

Moonrats have a very strong smell. They smell like ammonia. This smell is quite sharp. There are two types of moonrats. One type lives in Sumatra and Malaysia. These have white heads and black bodies. The other type lives in Borneo. These are mostly white.

Moonrats are nocturnal. This means they are active at night. During the day, they hide under logs or roots. They live in wet forests and swamps. They often go into the water. Moonrats eat earthworms and small bugs.

These animals can live up to five years. They are not a threatened species. However, people cutting down forests can hurt them. Some people in Borneo use moonrats for food or medicine. You can find moonrats in protected parks too.
