Pterygota

life science Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Most insects have wings. This big group is called Pterygota. It includes almost all insects. In fact, they make up 99.9% of all bugs!

Some insects do not have wings. These are the silverfishes and jumping bristletails. They are not part of Pterygota. The Pterygota group is very old. The first ones lived about 324 million years ago. This was during a time called the mid-Carboniferous.

These insects changed and grew quickly. Some groups have wings to fly. Other groups lost their wings a long time ago.

There are many different kinds. You might see a bee or an ant. These are in a group called Hymenoptera. You might also see a beetle. Beetles belong to the group Coleoptera.

Some bugs, like mayflies, have long tails. Most other winged bugs do not have these tails. Scientists study how these many groups are related to each other.
