Most are grey or bronze. They can be 3 mm to 18 mm long. These beetles get their name from how they swim. They swim in fast circles when they are scared.

These beetles have very special eyes. Each eye is divided into two parts. One part stays above the water. The other part stays below the water. This lets them see in both directions.

Their bodies are shaped like a smooth oval. This shape helps them move through water easily. Their middle and back legs are flat. They have tiny hairs on them to help them swim. Their front legs are long. They use these to grab food.

Whirligig beetles often stay in groups. They can swim behind each other to save power. This is called drafting. They also carry a bubble of air under their wing covers. This air bubble lets them swim deep under the water for a long time.
