How do they breathe? Some beetles carry an air bubble. This is called an elytra cavity. It stays under their bellies. This bubble lets them breathe. It also keeps water out of their breathing holes. Other beetles use a plastron. This is a thin layer of air. It works like a gill. It lets them take air from the water.

These beetles eat different things. Some are herbivores. They eat plants like algae or leaves. They can even suck juice from stems. Some are scavengers. They eat dead plants or tiny dead things. Other beetles are predators. This means they hunt for food. The great diving beetle is a predator. It eats worms and tadpoles. It can even eat small fish.
