Water beetles are special insects. They are adapted to live in water. This can happen at any stage of their life. Most live in fresh water like ponds. A few live in the ocean near the shore. There are about 2,000 species of these beetles. They live on lands all around the world.

These beetles have clever ways to breathe. Many carry an air bubble under their bellies. This is called an elytra cavity. This bubble provides a supply of air. It also keeps water out of their spiracles. Spiracles are the small breathing holes on their bodies. Other beetles use a plastron. This is a thin layer of air on their exoskeleton. It works like a physical gill to take gas from the water.

Water beetles have different diets. Some are herbivores. They eat aquatic plants like algae or leaves. They might suck juice from a plant stem. Other beetles are scavengers. They eat decomposing organic material. This includes dead plants or feces. Some beetles are predators. The great diving beetle is a famous predator. It eats worms, tadpoles, and even small fish.

Some beetle families stay in water forever. These include the Dytiscidae and the Gyrinidae. Whirligig beetles are part of the Gyrinidae family. Squeak beetles belong to the Hygrobiidae family. Skiff beetles are in the Hydroscaphidae family. Other families like the Haliplidae are also always aquatic. However, some adults do not live in water. Families like the Hydrophilidae may have land adults.

Life cycles for these insects can change. Many have larvae that live in the water. These young insects are called aquatic larvae. Some of these insects live on land as adults. Some families have fringed hind legs for swimming. These legs help them move through the water. This helps them find food or escape. You can see these different ways of living in nature.
