They belong to a family called Reduviidae. This family is found all over the world. Most of these bugs live on land and are ambush predators. This means they wait for prey to come near them.

There are about 7,000 different species in this family. They belong to a large group of true bugs. Some subfamilies have special names like ambush bugs or thread-legged bugs.

These bugs have a very special way of eating. They have a long, curved mouth called a proboscis. They use this to inject saliva into their prey. This saliva contains enzymes that melt the insides of the insect. This way of eating is called extraoral digestion.

The bug then sucks out the liquid. This saliva can even kill prey that is much larger than the bug. Some bugs even use their mouth to make sounds. They rub the proboscis against a ridge to scare away enemies.

Scientists have studied these bugs for a long time. The name Reduviidae comes from the genus Reduvius. This name comes from a Latin word meaning "hangnail."

Some bugs are very good at hiding. The masked hunter, or Reduvius personatus, covers itself in dust. In India, the species Acanthaspis pedestris uses debris to hide. Some people even keep these bugs as pets. They help by hunting pests like bedbugs or cockroaches.

Not all assassin bugs hunt other insects. A group called kissing bugs drinks blood instead.

They are part of the Triatominae subfamily. These bugs often bite humans near the eyes or lips. This is how they got their common name. Some of these bugs can spread Chagas disease. This disease is very serious in Central and South America. It causes about 12,000 deaths every year. You should be careful with large bugs because their bite is very painful.

These bugs have been around for a very long time. Fossils show they lived during the Cretaceous period.

One fossil genus is called Simplicivenius. Scientists use DNA to learn about their history. They think these bugs split from other groups during the Jurassic period. Some bugs have legs like a praying mantis to catch prey. Others, like the feather-legged bug, have special hairs on their legs. These different shapes help them survive in their homes.
