Ladybugs are small beetles found all over the world.

In North America, people call them ladybugs. In the United Kingdom, they are called ladybirds. Most ladybugs are oval with domed backs. They have bright colors like red, orange, or yellow.

These colors are aposematic. This means they act as a warning. The bright patterns tell predators that the beetles taste bad.

Many ladybugs are hunters. They eat tiny insects like aphids. Because they eat these pests, they are helpful to farmers. Other species eat plants or fungi.

Ladybugs grow in four stages. They start as eggs. Then they become larvae, which are long with square heads.

Next, they become a pupa. The pupa is a stage where they stay still. Finally, they become adults.

In cold areas, ladybugs hibernate during winter. They might sleep under rocks or grass. In hot areas, they sleep during the dry season. This sleep is called dormancy.

Some ladybugs can even fly long distances to find food or homes.
