Male beetles have very large jaws called mandibles. These jaws look like the antlers of a stag deer. Males use them to wrestle other males. They fight for food like tree sap. They also fight for good places to mate. During a fight, a male tries to grab the other beetle's claws. This helps him knock his opponent off balance.

Females are usually smaller than males. Their jaws are smaller but much more powerful. These beetles are very slow runners. They often fly to get from place to place.

The young beetles are called larvae. They live in rotting wood for several years. They grow through three stages. In the last stage, some grubs can be as big as a human finger. They then make a small cell from wood and soil. This helps them change into adult beetles.
