Fireflies use a special way to make light. This is called bioluminescence. It happens in parts called photophores. These are light organs on their bodies. To make light, they mix two things. One is a substance called luciferin. The other is an enzyme called luciferase. When they add oxygen, they glow! This is a "cold light." It does not get hot.

Most fireflies use light to find mates. Males often fly and flash patterns. Females may stay on the ground and flash back. Some females use light to trick males. They mimic other beetles to catch them as food.

Baby fireflies also glow. Their light is a warning. It tells predators that they taste bad. This helps them stay safe.
