Fireflies are a large family of beetles called Lampyridae. There are more than 2,400 different species in this group. Many people call them lightning bugs or glowworms.

Most fireflies are soft-bodied insects. They live in warm, tropical places or temperate lands. Many like to stay in wet areas like marshes or wooded spots. These places provide plenty of food for their young.

Fireflies are very special because they can make their own light.

This light comes from a process called bioluminescence. It happens inside special light organs called photophores. These organs are usually on the lower abdomen of a female.

To make the glow, the beetle uses a substance called luciferin. It also uses an enzyme called luciferase. When these mix with oxygen and magnesium, light is made. This is a "cold light," which means it does not get hot. The light can look yellow, green, or even pale red.

Scientists have studied these beetles for a very long time. People have noticed them since classical antiquity. Even ancient cultures used them to signify different things. In Japan, people find them very beautiful. They even set aside special parks just to see them.

We can even find very old fossils of these beetles. Some fossils were found in Burmese amber from 99 million years ago. These fossils show that fireflies had light organs a long time ago.

Fireflies use their light to talk to each other. Most adults use flashes to find a mate. Males often fly and flash specific patterns. Females might stay on the ground and flash back.

Some species, like those in the genus Photinus, have very unique patterns. In places like the Great Smoky Mountains, they can even flash all at once. This is called synchronization. In the Philippines, you can see thousands of them in the town of Donsol.

Some females, called Photuris, use light to trick males. They mimic other beetles to catch them for food.

Fireflies go through a full life cycle called metamorphosis. They start as eggs laid near the ground. The larvae hatch and eat things like snails or slugs.

Most larvae hibernate under the ground or tree bark during winter. They eventually turn into pupae and then emerge as adults. While they grow, the larvae glow to warn predators. This light tells animals that the larvae taste bad. This helps the young fireflies stay safe while they grow up.
