We have evidence that fireflies have existed for a very long time. The oldest known fossils of the Lampyridae family come from Burmese amber. These ancient fossils show that light-producing organs were already present. Scientists believe the ancestral glow color for all living fireflies was likely green. This conclusion comes from studying their genomes. Humans have also been interested in fireflies since classical antiquity. In Japan, fireflies are highly appreciated, and special parks are set aside for them.

Today, firefly populations are facing many serious challenges. Scientists believe they are declining worldwide. Many species in North America are now considered threatened with extinction.
