Antlions are a large group of insects. There are about 2,000 different species. They live all over the world. Most live in warm, tropical areas.

The babies are very different from the adults. Many larvae, or baby insects, dig pits in the sand. These pits act as traps. When an ant walks near the edge, it slips. The ant falls down the steep walls.

The baby stays at the bottom of the pit. It hides with only its big jaws showing. If the prey tries to climb out, the larva throws sand at it. This makes the walls fall in. The larva uses its jaws to inject venom. This stops the prey from moving. Then, it sucks out the liquids. In North America, people call these babies doodlebugs. This is because they leave curly marks in the sand.

When the larva is big enough, it makes a cocoon. It uses silk and sand to build it. Inside, it changes into an adult. The adult has two pairs of long wings. Most adults fly at night. They live for a short time, often about 25 days.
