Megaloptera

life science Maturity 5-7 Next article →

Megaloptera are a group of insects. There are about 300 known species. This group includes alderflies, fishflies, and dobsonflies. Their name means "large wings." This is because they have big, clumsy wings.

In the Americas, many people know the dobsonfly. The males have long mandibles. These are strong jaws. They look like tusks. Males use them to impress females. They also use them to fight other males. These fights help them flip each other over.

The babies live in fresh water. We call these larvae. They are carnivores. This means they eat other small animals. They eat worms, clams, and tiny insects. They use strong jaws to catch food.

These larvae grow very slowly. It can take one to five years to grow. When they are ready, they crawl onto land. They hide in damp soil or under logs. They change into adults there. Many adults do not eat at all. They only live for a few days or weeks. They live just long enough to mate.
