Mayflies are small insects that live in water.

Their young live in fresh water for months or years. These young are called nymphs. Nymphs need clean water to live. They grow by shedding their skin many times.

When a nymph is ready, it changes into a winged form. This stage is called a subimago. Mayflies are unique because they molt one more time after they have wings. The subimago soon molts into a full adult. We call the adult an imago.

Adult mayflies do not eat. They have mouthparts that do not work. Their only job is to make more mayflies. Most adults live for a very short time. One kind lives for less than five minutes!

In many places, mayflies hatch in huge groups. This is called a hatch. They dance in the air to find mates. After mating, females lay eggs in or on the water. The eggs sink to the bottom. They will hatch into new nymphs later.
