Odonata is a group of flying insects. This group includes dragonflies and damselflies.

They are great hunters. Adults use their legs to catch prey while they fly. They have large heads with big eyes. These eyes help them see very well.

Dragonflies and damselflies look a bit different. Dragonflies are often bulky. They hold their wings out when they rest. Damselflies are slender. They fold their wings along their bodies when they rest.

These insects start their lives in the water. We call these young insects nymphs.

Nymphs are hunters too. They eat small insects, tiny fish, and tadpoles. Damselfly nymphs breathe through gills on their bodies. Dragonfly nymphs breathe through an organ in their back end.

Odonata are very old. Some fossils show they have been around for a long time. One ancient relative had a very large wingspan. This insect was a giant! Today, we study these bugs to learn about nature. They help us know if water is clean. If we see many different types, the water is likely healthy.
