Damselflies are small, flying insects. They belong to a group called Zygoptera. They look like dragonflies, but they are slimmer. Most damselflies fold their wings along their bodies when they rest.

Damselflies are predators. This means they hunt and eat other insects. The adults hunt flies and mosquitoes. They often sit on plants to catch prey.

The young damselflies are called nymphs. Nymphs live in fresh water like ponds and rivers. They have gills to help them breathe underwater. When they are ready, they undergo metamorphosis. This is a way to change from a nymph to an adult. The nymph climbs out of the water. Its skin splits, and it grows wings.

Males are often much brighter than females.

Some species have very colorful wings. Damselflies need clean water to live. If you see them, the water is likely healthy.
