This study showed that some traditional families, like Amphipterygidae, are paraphyletic and require new classifications.

An adult damselfly has a specialized body designed for hunting and flight. Their large compound eyes are more widely separated than those of dragonflies. Above the eyes sits the frons, or forehead, and below it is the clypeus. They also have three simple eyes called ocelli, which help measure light intensity. The thorax, which houses the flight muscles, is divided into segments. The first is the prothorax, which carries the front legs. The other segments are fused into a single unit called the synthorax. This part of the body holds both pairs of wings and the remaining legs.

Many damselfly species show sexual dimorphism, meaning males and females look different. In many groups, the males are brightly coloured to attract mates. For example, in the Coenagrionidae family, males are often bright blue with black markings. Females are usually more plain, using cryptic colours like green or brown to stay hidden. Some species even show female-limited polymorphism. This means a small number of females look like males, which may help them avoid harassment from other males.

Reproduction in damselflies involves a unique physical connection. Mating pairs often form a shape known as a "wheel" or "heart." The male uses his appendages to clasp the female at the back of her head. The female then curls her abdomen down to pick up sperm from the male's secondary genitalia. This occurs at the base of the male's abdomen. After mating, the pair often stays together while the female uses a robust ovipositor to lay eggs. She places these eggs within the tissue of plants located near the water.
