Caddisfly

life science Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Caddisflies are a group of insects. They have two life stages. The young live in water. The adults live on land.

There are about 14,500 known species. Most larvae use silk to build homes. Some make a portable case. This is a tube they carry as they move. They use silk to stick sand, sticks, or pebbles to the tube.

This case protects them while they look for food. Other larvae make a fixed retreat. They stay in one spot and wait for food to come to them. Some even make silk nets to catch particles.

Adult caddisflies look like small moths. They have two pairs of hairy wings. They are close relatives of moths and butterflies. Most adults do not eat. They live for only a few weeks.

These insects are very useful to study. They are bioindicators. This means they show if water is clean. Caddisflies die if the water is polluted. This helps people check water health.
