Moths go through a life cycle called metamorphosis. This is a way to change from one form to another. It starts as an egg. The egg hatches into a larva. We call these larvae caterpillars.

Most caterpillars eat plants. They use a spinneret to make silk. Some build a cocoon to stay safe. Inside the cocoon, they become a pupa. This is a stage where they do not move.

When the change is done, the adult moth comes out. It must spread its wings to dry and harden. Adult moths have a proboscis. This is a long tube used to drink nectar.
