This is because their babies, called larvae, eat many things. These larvae eat animal fibers. They can eat silk, wool, fur, and hair. They eat a material called keratin. Keratin is what makes up those animal fibers.

These moths can damage your clothes. They can also eat rugs and soft toys. They might even eat taxidermied animals. Larvae can act like bookworms. They chew through paper to reach book bindings. They might also eat mold.

Many moths live in attics or basements. You can find them in pet hair or bird nests. To stop them, you can use a vacuum. You can also wash items in hot water. Wash them for 20 to 30 minutes to kill eggs. You can also freeze clothes in sealed bags. Do this for a fortnight, or 14 days. This kills the adults, eggs, and larvae. Some people use pheromone traps. These traps use scents to catch moths. But traps only catch certain types of moths.
