life science Maturity 5-7 Next article →

Flour beetles are small, reddish-brown insects. They have an oval shape. They also have clubbed antennae on their heads. These bugs are very tiny. They are only 1/8 to 3/16 of an inch long. Some types can fly. Other types can only crawl.

These beetles love to eat. They eat wheat, grains, and spices. They even eat cake mix and chocolate. They can live in very dry places. They can even survive more radiation than a cockroach. In the past, they lived under tree bark. Now, they live in stored food.

Scientists like to study them in labs. They are easy to keep. They grow very fast in flour. This helps researchers learn about how groups of bugs live.

Some beetles are called mealworms when they are full-grown. Females can live for about one year. They use a pheromone to find mates. A pheromone is a chemical signal that lets out a scent. This scent helps males and females find each other. Red flour beetles are very good at winning fights for food. They can grow large groups of bugs very quickly.
