Flour mite

life science Maturity 5-7 Next article →

The flour mite is a tiny bug. It lives in grain and flour. These mites are pale greyish white. They have pink legs. They are very common in food.

These bugs grow very fast. The female lays many eggs at once. Their whole life lasts just over two weeks. In warehouses, they can grow in huge numbers. This happens in food that is stored poorly. Dead mites and old skins make a brown, fluffy dust.

These mites can change food. They make food taste bad. They also make food smell sickly sweet. The dust they make can cause allergies. Some people get an itch called Baker's itch.

These mites can also hurt farm animals. Animals might eat less food. They can get sick or grow slowly. Pigs may not gain weight well if they eat infested feed.

Some people use these mites for food. They put them in Mimolette cheese. This helps the cheese taste better. When they do this, people call them cheese mites.
