Nairobi fly

life science Maturity 5-7 Next article →

The Nairobi fly is a small beetle. It is also called the Nairobi Eye. Some people call it a dragon bug. These beetles come from East Africa. They live in Tanzania. The beetles are black and red. They are 6 to 10 mm long. They are very thin.

These bugs live in wet places. They eat pests on crops. This helps farmers. Heavy rains help them grow. Sometimes they come in large groups.

These bugs do not bite or sting. They have a toxin called pederin. A toxin is a harmful substance. This liquid is inside the bug. It can cause skin burns. This is called Paederus dermatitis.

Do not crush the bug on your skin. If you crush it, the liquid comes out. This often happens at night. People may brush the bug off their faces while sleeping. You should gently blow the bug away instead.

These beetles like bright lights. They fly toward lights at night. This brings them near people. New research says LED lights might help. Using these lights may stop the bugs from attacking.
