Most bed bugs are light brown and flat. They are very small. An adult is about 4 to 5 mm long. There are two main kinds. One is the common bed bug. The other lives in warm, tropical places.

These bugs like to hide in dark spots. They stay in cracks in walls or mattress seams. They come out at night to feed. They find people by sensing warmth and breath.

Their bites can cause many skin changes. Some people get small red spots. Others might get itchy blisters. These bites can itch for many days. Most bites happen on skin not covered by blankets.

Bed bugs spread by crawling or hitching rides. They hide in bags, clothes, or furniture. It can be hard to remove them from a home. They can live for a long time without food. You may need to heat a room to get rid of them. You can also wash clothes in very hot water.
