Female mites burrow into the top layer of your skin. They make small tunnels to live in. They also lay eggs in these tunnels. The itch and red bumps happen because of an allergic reaction. This is how your body reacts to the mites. The itch often feels worse at night.

Scabies spreads through long skin-to-skin contact. It can spread in crowded places like schools or hospitals. It can also spread to people living in the same house. Some people get a severe form called crusted scabies. This happens to people with weak immune systems. In this form, millions of mites live on the skin.

Doctors use medicine to treat scabies. You should also wash your clothes and bedding in hot water. This kills any mites that are not on a person. Mites can only live away from skin for three days.
