Most crab lice live in pubic hair. They can also live in beard hair or eyelashes. They cannot jump. They move from person to person through close contact. This can happen through bedding or clothing too.

Crab lice are ectoparasites. This means they live on the outside of a body. They feed only on blood. They eat about four or five times every day. A female lays about three eggs each day. These eggs are called nits. The eggs hatch in six to eight days. The young lice grow into adults in about 25 days.

Most people feel itching. This happens because of the saliva from the louse. Sometimes the skin may look grey or blue. This color can stay for a few days. The lice do not spread diseases. However, scratching the skin can cause a new infection.
