There are about 2,500 different species. Most fleas live on birds or mammals. They eat blood to survive.

Fleas have very special bodies. They are flat from side to side. This shape helps them slide through fur or feathers.

They also have strong claws to hold on tight. Their bodies are covered in hard plates called sclerites. These plates help them survive when a host tries to scratch them away.

Fleas are some of the best jumpers in the world. They use a special protein called resilin to jump. This protein works like a bow and arrow. It stores power and then lets it out very fast. A flea can jump 60 times its own length!

Fleas go through four life stages. They start as tiny white eggs. Then they become worm-like larvae. The larvae do not have eyes or legs. Next, they build a silk cocoon called a pupa. Finally, they emerge as adults. Some fleas can lay 5,000 eggs in their life.
