Most cat fleas live on cats. Many also live on dogs. These bugs are reddish-brown. They are very thin. This shape helps them slip through thick hair.

A female flea lays many white eggs. The eggs do not stick to the pet. They fall into the ground or carpets. Soon, tiny larvae hatch from the eggs. These larvae look like small grubs. They hide away from light. They eat dried blood from the host.

Next, the larva makes a cocoon. This is a hard shell for the pupa stage. The pupa can wait inside the shell. It waits for signs of a host.

When a host is near, the adult flea jumps out. It finds blood to eat right away. Fleas can live for up to two years. They can also carry diseases. Some fleas can give pets tapeworms. They can also cause itchy skin. To stop them, you must clean the home well. Use a vacuum to pick up eggs and larvae.
