Many species live near flowing water. This is called a lotic habitat.

Black fly larvae live underwater. They use tiny hooks to hold onto rocks. They also use silk threads to stay in place. These larvae have mouth brushes. These are little fans around their mouths. The fans catch tiny bits of food in the water.

Some larvae have a special way to eat. They have bacteria in their guts. These bacteria turn plant matter into sugar. This helps the larvae grow in streams.

Adult flies need food to fly. They eat nectar for power. Most female flies also bite birds or mammals. They need blood to make eggs. Males do not bite.
