The cat flea is a very common parasitic insect.

Most of these fleas live on domestic cats. However, many fleas found on dogs are also this species. They are reddish-brown and very small. Most adults are only 1 to 2 mm long. They are shaped very thin from side to side. This shape helps them slip between thick hairs. They stay just above the skin of their host.

These insects go through four life stages. This way of growing is called complete metamorphosis. First, a female lays tiny white eggs. She can lay 20 to 30 eggs every day. These eggs do not stick to the animal. They fall into the carpet or soil instead. Next, the eggs hatch into larvae. These larvae look like small grubs. They hide in dark places away from light. They eat dried blood that falls from the host.

After the larva stage, the insect becomes a pupa. The larva spins a sticky cocoon. This cocoon often picks up dirt for camouflage. The pupa can stay inside and wait. It waits for signs of a host nearby. It looks for warmth or changes in light. It can even sense carbon dioxide. When a host is near, the adult jumps out.

Cat fleas originally came from Africa. They spread across the world as humans kept cats. Most fleas found on pets are the subspecies Ctenocephalides felis felis. Over 90% of fleas on dogs and cats belong to this group. A single female might lay 2,000 to 8,000 eggs in her life. Most fleas only live for a short time on a host. If they fall off, they may die quickly. Male fleas often die within two days of being alone.

Fleas can cause many problems for pets and people. They can carry the dog tapeworm. They can also cause flea allergy dermatitis. This is an itchy skin reaction to flea saliva. Some fleas may even carry germs like Rickettsia felis. Because most fleas live in the environment, cleaning is vital. You should vacuum often and wash linens in hot water. This helps stop the life cycle in your home.
