Dog flea

life science Maturity 5-7 Next article →

The dog flea is a tiny living thing. It is a type of ectoparasite. This means it lives on the outside of a body. These fleas live on many different mammals. They especially like to live on domestic dogs and cats.

They look very much like the cat flea. However, the cat flea is found more often around the world. Dog fleas are very important to vets. This is because they can spread a worm called Dipylidium caninum.

They feed on blood to stay alive. Sometimes, these small bugs will even bite humans.

Fleas have a very interesting way they work. Their mouthparts are made to pierce skin. This allows them to suck blood from their host. The dog flea has a body that is flat from side to side. It also has hairs and spines. These parts help them travel easily through thick hair.

They do not have wings to fly. Instead, they use long hind legs to jump. The female flea must eat blood to make eggs. She can lay about 4,000 eggs in a pet's fur.

These eggs go through four stages. They start as an embryo and become a larva. Next, they are a pupa and finally an imago, or adult. This cycle takes two to three weeks in warm weather. It can take longer when it is cool.

In the past, the dog flea was the main flea for dogs everywhere. This was true for the whole world. Things have changed since the early 21st century. In the developed world, the cat flea has taken its place. Now, the cat flea is the most common flea found on dogs there.

However, the dog flea is still the most common in the developing world. Scientists study these changes to understand how pets live. Knowing which flea is present helps people treat them correctly.

Fleas can cause many hard jobs for pets and people. They cause itching and discomfort. A dog might scratch or bite its head, neck, or tail. This can make the skin red and sore.

Some dogs have flea allergy dermatitis. This means they are allergic to flea saliva. They might lose hair or get bald spots. They can even get infections that make their skin smell. Fleas can also cause anemia in extreme cases. In humans, bites can cause itchy red bumps. These bumps often appear on the arms or joints. If you press them, they turn white.

Keeping fleas away is a big job with many steps. You must treat the pet and the home. You can use products like sprays or powders to kill them. Vacuuming is a great way to help. It can remove about 50% of flea eggs from carpets.

You should also wash dog bedding every week. It is good to clean cars and garages too. Wild animals like raccoons or chipmunks can carry fleas. You can stop this by not feeding them. Many people use collars or monthly medicine to stay safe. You should keep using these tools for at least half a year. This helps stop the fleas from coming back.
