This condition can be very quiet for a long time. People might have no symptoms at all for many years. In some places, like Asia, it can cause firm lumps under the skin. These lumps might be between one and two centimeters wide. After a long time, these lumps can become swollen and painful.

A serious version affects the brain and is called neurocysticercosis. In many developing countries, this is a common cause of seizures.

The infection starts when a person eats food or drinks water. This food or water has tiny tapeworm eggs in it. These eggs often come from human feces. Once the eggs are eaten, they enter the intestine and hatch. They become tiny larvae that move into the bloodstream. These larvae travel to different parts of the body to grow. In about two months, they become small, white, shiny lumps called cysticerci.

These lumps can grow in muscles, the eyes, or the skin.

Doctors use many tools to find these tiny lumps. They often use CT scans or MRI scans to take pictures of the brain. These scans help see if the cysts are active or inactive. Doctors can also look for special white blood cells called eosinophils. These cells show up in the blood or the fluid around the brain. Sometimes, doctors must take a small piece of tissue to check it. If the lumps are in the eye, a doctor can see them using a special light.

History shows that this disease has been around for a very long time. It is known as one of the neglected tropical diseases. In 2015, it caused about 400 deaths around the world. It is very common in Asia, Sub-Saharan Africa, and Latin America. In some areas, up to 25% of people are affected. However, it is very uncommon in the developed world.

This is because of better ways to manage food and water.

We can stop this infection by following simple rules of hygiene. Cooking pork very well is one of the best ways to stay safe. Using clean water and proper toilets also helps stop the spread. It is important to treat people who carry the adult tapeworm. Scientists are even working on vaccines for pigs to stop the cycle. If pigs are healthy, the tapeworm has a harder time moving from humans to animals. Keeping pigs in enclosed pens also helps keep them away from human waste.
