The pork tapeworm, known as Taenia solium, is a unique living thing. It is a white, flat worm that looks like a long ribbon.

This parasite lives in many parts of the world. It is most common in places where people eat pork. The worm uses humans as its main home to grow into an adult. It uses pigs and boars as a middle step in its life. This cycle helps the worm spread from one living thing to another.

The worm has a very specific way of working. It starts when a pig eats eggs found in contaminated food or water. Inside the pig, these eggs grow into tiny, fluid-filled sacs called cysticerci. If a human eats pork that has these sacs, the worm grows in their small intestine. This is called taeniasis. This version of the infection usually has no symptoms. A person might not even know the worm is there. It can stay in the body for many years.

There is another way the worm can affect people. This is called cysticercosis, which happens when humans eat the eggs instead of the cysts. The eggs hatch and travel through the blood to other parts of the body. They often form cysts in the muscles or the brain. When these cysts grow in the brain, it is called neurocysticercosis. This can cause headaches, dizziness, or even seizures. Doctors use special tools like scans to find these cysts in the body.

Scientists have learned a lot about how the adult worm is built. The front end is a small part called a scolex. This part is about 1 mm in diameter and has four suckers. It also has a rostellum, which is a part with two rows of tiny hooks. These hooks and suckers help the worm stay attached to the intestinal wall. The rest of the body is made of many segments called proglottids. There can be 800 to 900 of these segments in one worm.

Each segment is like a tiny, self-contained unit for making more worms. Because the worm is a hermaphrodite, each segment has both male and female parts. This allows the worm to reproduce very effectively. A single segment can hold more than 50,000 eggs. These eggs are very small, measuring only 35 to 42 micrometers. Understanding these tiny details helps doctors treat people who are sick. They use medicine or special tests to find and stop the worms.
