Ascariasis is a disease caused by a tiny parasite called Ascaris lumbricoides. This parasite is a type of roundworm that lives inside the human body.

Most people do not feel any symptoms at all. This usually happens if the person only has a few worms. However, having many worms can cause many different problems. Some people might feel a fever or have trouble breathing. Others might feel pain in their stomach or have diarrhea.

Children are often the most affected by these worms. It can make it hard for them to gain weight or learn well.

The way these worms work is a very busy journey. It starts when someone eats food or drinks water with eggs on it. These eggs come from feces, which is waste from the body. Once swallowed, the eggs hatch in the intestines. The tiny worms, called larvae, burrow through the gut wall. They travel through the blood to reach the lungs.

In the lungs, they move up the throat to be coughed up. Then, the person swallows them a second time. Finally, the larvae move back into the intestine to become adult worms.

Scientists and doctors have studied these worms for a long time. We know much about them because they are very common. In 1990, about 3,400 people died from this disease each year. By the year 2010, that number went down to about 2,700 deaths.

This shows that medicine and better cleaning are helping people stay safe. Doctors can find the eggs by looking at waste under a microscope. They look for a special oval shape with a bumpy shell. This helps them know exactly what is happening inside the body.

There are many important facts to know about these worms. About 0.8 to 1.2 billion people around the world have ascariasis. Most of these people live in sub-Saharan Africa, Latin America, and Asia.

A single female worm can lay about 200,000 eggs every single day. These eggs are very tough and can live for 15 years. Adult worms can live inside a person for one or two years. In some very rare cases, a large group of worms can block the intestine. This might even require a doctor to perform surgery to help the person.

We can protect ourselves by using things we already know. Washing hands with soap is a great way to stay safe. Using clean toilets and getting rid of waste properly also helps a lot.

If many people in one area are sick, doctors can give medicine to everyone. This is called mass drug administration. Common medicines used are called albendazole and mebendazole. These medicines work to remove the worms and their eggs. By keeping our water and food clean, we can stop the worms from spreading.
