To grow a strong shell, they must find enough calcium. If the weather gets too dry, they use a trick called aestivation. This is a way to rest during hard times. The snail seals itself inside its shell with a special hard coating. This helps the snail stay safe for up to three years.

Learning about these snails has taken many years. In 1961, Albert R. Mead wrote a famous book about them. His book was called "The Giant African Snail: A Problem in Economic Malacology." It helped people understand how the snails spread around the world. Before the year 1800, they were mostly found in Madagascar. Since then, they have moved to many new places. They reached the Seychelles in 1840 and India in 1847.
