Most people think of land snails when they hear the name. However, the word also includes sea snails and freshwater snails. Some animals look like snails but have no shell. These are called slugs. Slugs can squeeze into very small spaces to hide.

Snails live in many places around the world. You can find them in ditches and deserts. Some even live in the deepest parts of the sea.

A snail has three main body parts. The first is a muscular foot used for moving. The snail moves by contracting its foot in waves. This creates a path through a layer of mucus. The second part is the mantle. The mantle is the organ that makes the shell. It adds new material around a central axis called a columella. This creates the spiraling coils, or whorls, that you see.

The third part is the radula. This is a ribbon-like tongue with thousands of tiny teeth. The radula works like a file to rip food into small pieces.

Scientists have studied snails for a long time. We know that many snails belong to a group called Pulmonata. These are snails that use a lung to breathe. A study in 2010 by Jörger and others found that these groups are very diverse. Some snails use gills to breathe instead of lungs. Some snails even have both a gill and a lung. This helps them live in many different watery environments.

Snails come in many different sizes. The smallest land snail is called Angustopila psammion. It was found in 2022 and is only 0.6 mm wide. The largest sea snail is Syrinx aruanus. Its shell can reach 900 mm in length. One famous land snail was named Gee Geronimo. It was a giant African snail collected in Sierra Leone in 1976. It weighed exactly 900 g when it was measured in December 1978.

You might see snails in your own garden. Some people think of them as pests because they eat plants. However, some snails are even used as food.

Other snails are used to make skin care products from their mucus. Some snails even helped make colorful dyes in the past. Ancient people used a secretion from certain snails to make Tyrian purple. This shows how much snails are connected to human history.
