They are different from sea snails because they live on land. Most land snails have a hard shell to protect them. Snails without shells are called slugs. It can be hard to group all snails together. Some snails live in both wet and dry places. Many land snails are pulmonates, which means they have a lung to breathe air.

Moving is a very special way it works for a snail. They glide on a strong muscular foot. This foot uses waves of muscle to push the snail forward. A snail moves at a very slow speed. For example, a snail might move only 1 mm per second.

To help them slide, they make a thick mucus. This mucus is like a slippery path. It helps them crawl over sharp edges without getting hurt. The slime also keeps their soft bodies from drying out.

Building a home is a step-by-step task for a snail. A snail has a part called a mantle. This mantle covers the internal organs. The mantle also makes the shell. It adds new calcium carbonate to the edge of the shell. This process is how the shell grows larger.

Most shells grow in a spiral shape. This shape is called a logarithmic spiral. The center of the spiral was made when the snail was young. The outer part was made when the snail was older.

Snails have many interesting body parts. They have one or two pairs of tentacles on their heads. The top tentacles are eye stalks that carry their eyes.

The bottom tentacles help them smell. To eat, they use a radula. This is a ribbon with tiny teeth. It scrapes food into their mouths. You might even hear a large snail crunching its food. They have a simple brain divided into four sections. This brain lets them learn new things.

Snails come in many different sizes. The giant African snail can grow up to 30 cm.

On the other side, some snails are tiny. The Angustopila psammion is only about 0.6 mm wide. Most snails are hermaphrodites. This means they have both male and female organs. They can lay up to 100 eggs in the soil.

Some snails live for 2 or 3 years. Others, like the Roman snail, can live over 10 years in the wild.
