In the south of England, they live in grassy or bushy lands. They usually do not live in gardens there.

Each snail has a special way to survive the seasons. They can go into a sleep called estivation or hibernation. To stay safe, they make a calcareous epiphragm. This is a hard seal made of calcium. It closes the opening of their shell.

This seal helps them through dry summers or cold winters. The snails also have a way to reproduce. They are hermaphroditic, which means they have both male and female parts. In Central Europe, they start to reproduce in late May. They lay clutches of 40 to 65 eggs in June or July.

Scientists have studied these snails for a long time. Carl Linnaeus named this species in 1758. Many people have looked at how they live and grow. Some researchers study how they use their intestinal juice. This juice has special enzymes called sulfatases. Scientists use these to help prepare samples for analysis. This is done through a process called chromatography. These snails are very interesting to study in the wild.

These snails live in many different countries. Their range goes from France to western Russia. They are found in parts of Italy and Bulgaria too. In Great Britain, they live in the south and west of England. Some populations even live in the eastern United States and Canada.

In Germany, young snails like to eat the nettle plant. A snail can live for 20 years in nature. Some can live even longer, up to 35 years. However, many die from summer heat or winter frost.

Many people know these snails from their food. Ancient Romans used to eat them a long time ago. Today, they are very popular in French cooking.

In English, people use the French word escargot for them. This word simply means snail. It is hard to farm these snails for food. Most of the snails we eat come from the wild. They are protected by laws in many European countries. For example, it is illegal to sell them in Great Britain.
