Sea slug

life science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Sea slugs are many different kinds of marine animals. Most are gastropods, which means they are a type of sea snail. Over a long time, these snails changed their bodies. Some lost their shells completely. Others have a very small shell hidden inside.

Some people also call sea cucumbers sea slugs, but they are not gastropods. The name sea slug is a common name for many different creatures. These animals can have many different shapes and colors. They are truly amazing to find in the ocean.

Many sea slugs have special ways to stay safe. Some have very bright colors to warn others. These colors might mean the slug tastes bad. Others might have stinging cells called nematocysts.

The slug Glaucus atlanticus can even store these stinging cells from its prey. This slug eats things like the Portuguese man o' war. Some slugs, like the Pyjama slug, use color to show they are toxic. Other slugs, like the lettuce sea slug, have ruffles to help them.

These ruffles help them absorb more light.

Sea slugs have many interesting body parts to help them live. Most have rhinophores on their heads. These are tentacles used for smelling. A small eye sits at the base of each one.

Many slugs also have feathery parts called cerata on their backs. These parts act like gills to help them breathe. Some slugs, like the headshield slug, have heads shaped like shovels. They use these heads to dig into the sand. This keeps the sand out of their bodies while they hide.

Scientists have studied these animals for a long time. Thompson wrote about the biology of these molluscs in 1976. Later, Thompson and Brown wrote more in 1984. We know a lot about their different groups now. There are groups called sacoglossans and cephalaspideans. There are even tiny ones called sea butterflies and sea angels.

Even small slugs have brains. One type, Aplysia californica, has a brain with 20,000 nerve cells.

Sea slugs are part of a huge world of life. You can find them in the ocean or even in freshwater. Some have even moved to living on land.

The sea hare is a well-known type of sea slug. The California black sea hare is a very large one. It can grow to 75 centimeters long. It can also weigh 14 kilograms. These large slugs can use ink or slime to stay safe. It is fun to see how many ways they live.
