Glaucus atlanticus

life science Maturity 5-7 Next article →

The blue sea slug is a tiny, amazing creature. Many people call it the blue dragon or the sea swallow. It lives in the pelagic zone, which is the open ocean. This slug spends its life floating at the very surface. It stays afloat by using the water's surface tension. The slug also has a gas bubble in its stomach. This bubble helps it stay up in the water.

This slug has a very clever way of staying hidden. It uses a trick called countershading to stay safe. The blue side of its body faces up toward the sky. This color matches the blue of the ocean water. The silver-grey side faces down toward the bottom. This matches the bright sunlight shining through the surface. This helps it hide from animals looking from above or below.

Finding these slugs in the wild is quite a discovery. They live in many warm, tropical parts of the world. They have been seen near South Africa and Australia. Scientists found them in Peru in 2013 and India in 2012. In the Gulf of California, they moved north by 150 km. Sometimes, ocean currents push them onto sandy beaches. This happened in Thailand and Spain in the year 2025.

Feeding is a big part of how this slug lives. It eats stinging creatures like the Portuguese man o' war. The slug uses a tool called a radula to eat. This is a part with serrated teeth that can chip food. It uses a process called kleptocnidy to protect itself. It steals the stinging cells, called nematocysts, from its prey. It stores these stolen stings in finger-like parts called cerata.

Because it steals stings, you must be very careful. Touching this slug can cause a very painful sting. The sting can make a person feel sick or itchy. It is much like the sting from a man o' war. These slugs can live for up to one year. They are hermaphrodites, which means they have both male and female parts. They can lay up to 20 egg strings at once.
