life science Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Head lice are tiny insects that live on the human scalp.

They are very small, measuring only about 2 to 3 mm long. These bugs feed only on human blood to survive. They can only live on human head hair. Without a person to feed on, adult lice cannot live longer than three days. They do not jump or spring like fleas. Instead, they move by crawling from one person to another. This usually happens through direct contact between heads.

Most people notice head lice because their scalp feels very itchy. This itching often starts about 3 to 4 weeks after the lice arrive. During a first infection, the itch might not appear for up to six weeks. If you have had lice before, the itching might start much faster. You might see small bites on the back of the neck.

While the itching is uncomfortable, it is generally not a serious health condition. In some places like Ethiopia, lice can spread certain diseases. However, they do not seem to spread these diseases in Europe or North America.

Finding the lice is the most important step for a correct diagnosis. You must find live lice to know for sure if someone has an infestation.

People often find empty eggshells called nits in the hair. White nits are usually empty, but brown nits might still have live larvae inside. Finding nits alone does not mean there is an active infestation. It is easy to mistake dandruff or hairspray for nits. Using a fine-tooth comb on wet hair with conditioner is a great way to find them. This method is very helpful for checking the areas near the ears and the neck.

There are many ways to treat head lice once they are found. One way is using a special fine-tooth comb to remove them manually. Some people choose to shave their head to get rid of the lice. Doctors also suggest using special medicines called pediculicides. Dimethicone is a silicone oil that is very effective. It works by coating the lice so they cannot work properly.

Other medicines include ivermectin and malathion. Some older medicines, like permethrin, are now less effective because lice have become resistant to them.

Head lice are very common, especially among children. In the United States, between 6 and 12 million children are infected every year. They are often found more in girls than in boys. In Europe, between 1% and 20% of different groups of people have them. It is important to remember that lice do not care about cleanliness. Having lice does not mean a person is dirty. They can spread easily in schools or homes. Checking the whole family can help stop the lice from moving from person to person.
