Bed bugs are small insects that live as parasites. This means they feed on the blood of other living things. Most of them like to feed at night. There are two main types of these insects. One is called Cimex lectularius, the common bed bug. The other is Cimex hemipterus, which lives in tropical areas.

These bugs are usually light brown or reddish-brown. They are very flat and oval in shape. Adults are typically between 4 and 5 mm long. They can range from 1 to 7 mm in size.

These insects have a very specific way they work. They use mouth parts to saw through skin. Then, they inject saliva that contains painkillers and anticoagulants. These substances keep the blood flowing while they feed. Bed bugs find their hosts by sensing carbon dioxide from breath. They also use warmth and human odors to find a way to a person.

After they eat, they follow a chemical trail back to a hiding spot. They often live in dark places like mattress seams or wall cracks. They might also hide in luggage, furniture, or even laptop computers.

Humans have known about these bugs for a long time. Fossils found in Egypt show they have been parasites for at least 3,500 years. After World War II, they were almost gone from many developed countries. However, infestations have gone up since the 1990s. They are now common in almost every part of the world.

Experts say this happened because of more international travel. People also move more second-hand goods between places. Some pesticides were also banned, which helped the bugs survive.

Bites can cause many different things to happen to the skin. Some people see no change at all. Others might get small, flat, red spots. Some people even get large, itchy blisters.

These bites usually happen on skin not covered by blankets. This includes the arms, legs, feet, face, or neck. Itching is a very common symptom that can last for days. In rare cases, a person might have a serious allergic reaction. Most symptoms go away on their own in one or two weeks.

Getting rid of bed bugs can be a very hard job. This is because they can survive for a long time without food. Some can live up to 300 days without a meal.

To clean a home, people might heat a room for over 90 minutes. They can also wash clothes in very hot water. Frequent vacuuming is another way to help. Some people use special powders called diatomaceous earth in their rooms. You can also check your bags and clothes when you travel to stay safe.
