Helminthiasis is a disease caused by parasitic worms called helminths. These worms can live inside humans and many different animals.

Scientists group these parasites into three main types: tapeworms, flukes, and roundworms. Most of these worms live in the gastrointestinal tract, which is the gut. Some worms can also burrow into other organs like the lungs or liver. This can cause physical damage to the body's tissues. Having these parasites is a serious health issue for many people around the world.

One common worm is called Ascaris, which causes ascariasis. The way it works follows a specific cycle. Adult worms live in the small intestine and produce many eggs.

A single female can produce about 200,000 eggs every day. These eggs leave the body through feces and can become infective after 18 days. If a person swallows these eggs, the worms develop into larvae in the intestine. These larvae then travel through the blood to the lungs. They move up the throat to be re-swallowed so they can return to the gut. This whole cycle takes about two to three months to finish.

Many groups work hard to stop these infections. In 2012, a project called the London Declaration on Neglected Tropical Diseases was launched. This project brought together pharmaceutical companies and non-governmental organizations. Their goal was to control or get rid of certain diseases by the year 2020.

These illnesses are often called neglected tropical diseases. They are very important to study because they affect so many people. Scientists look at how worms move through soil, water, and waste to find better ways to stop them.

There are many important facts about how these worms spread. Soil-transmitted helminths affect about one quarter of the human population.

People can get infected by eating contaminated vegetables or drinking dirty water. Eating raw or undercooked meat is another way to catch tapeworms. Some worms, like hookworms, can even penetrate the skin directly. Other worms, like those that cause filariasis, are spread by mosquitoes. Even pets like cats and dogs can sometimes pass certain roundworms to humans.

Helminthiasis can cause many hard jobs for the human body. Worms often compete with the host for nutrients from food. This can lead to malnutrition, stunted growth, and anemia, which is a lack of iron.

Heavy hookworm infections are especially known for causing anemia because they feed on blood. These health problems can make it harder for children to learn or do well in school. Chronic illness can also lead to poverty and poor work performance. By understanding these worms, we can help people stay healthy and strong.
