Psocodea

life science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Psocodea is a big group of insects. They include bark lice, book lice, and parasitic lice. There are about 11,000 different species in this group. Most of these bugs are very small. They are only 1 to 10 millimetres long.

Some of these insects are called book lice. They often live in old books. These bugs eat the paste used to bind books together. Other kinds are called bark lice. They live on trees. These insects eat algae and lichen.

Some bugs in this group are parasitic lice. These are also called Phthiraptera. They live on other animals. Scientists think they grew from older bark lice. One kind of bug, called Liposcelis, lives in bird nests. This may be how lice began to live on animals.

There are three main groups in Psocodea. The first is Trogiomorpha. This is the smallest group. The second is Troctomorpha. This group includes the parasitic lice. The third is Psocomorpha. This is the largest group. It has about 3,600 species. Many of these have wings with different patterns.
