Most angel insects have two different forms. This is called polymorphism. Most are pale and have no wings. They also have no eyes. These insects live in dark spots.

A few insects have wings and eyes. These winged insects are darker. They can shed their wings if they need to. This happens if their home becomes too tough. The winged insects fly to find new homes. This helps them start new colonies.

Angel insects have nine-part antennae. They use mouthparts to chew food. They eat tiny bits of dead things. They also eat small mites. This helps the forest floor stay clean. This work is called nutrient cycling. It helps move food through the ecosystem. Some species have been around for a long time. Scientists found fossils in amber from 99 million years ago.
