Psocoptera

life science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Psocodea are a group of small insects. People often call them booklice or barklice.

They get their names from what they eat. Booklice live near old books. They eat the starch in book glue. Barklice live on trees. They eat algae and lichen.

These bugs are scavengers. This means they eat tiny bits of old things. They use parts of their mouths to scrape up food. Some species can even make silk. They use this silk to make webs on tree branches.

Most psocids live in the woods. They do not bite people. They are very small. Some species have wings, but others do not. The young bugs are called nymphs. They look like tiny versions of the adults. Nymphs do not have wings. They molt, or shed their skin, six times as they grow.

Most of these insects live for only a few months. They lay eggs in small cracks or on leaves. The eggs take two to four weeks to hatch.
