Tarantula hawk

life science Maturity 5-7 Next article →

The tarantula hawk is a large spider wasp. These wasps have blue-black bodies. They also have bright, rust-colored wings. This bright color is called aposematic. This means the colors warn others to stay away. The wasp has a very painful sting. It is one of the most painful stings in the world.

Female wasps hunt large tarantula spiders. The female stings the spider between its legs. This sting makes the spider unable to move. Then, the wasp drags the spider to a nest. She lays one egg on the spider.

The egg hatches into a larva. This larva eats the living spider. It avoids vital organs to keep the spider alive. This gives the larva more food. Later, the larva becomes an adult wasp.

Adult wasps drink nectar from flowers. They like milkweed and mesquite trees. These wasps live on almost every continent. They are even the state insect of New Mexico. A group of school children helped choose them.
