Clothes moths are small insects that many people call pests.

They are not just one kind of moth. Several different species belong to this group. One common type is the webbing clothes moth, or Tineola bisselliella. Another type is the case-bearing clothes moth, known as Tinea pellionella. Some moths are very destructive to fabrics. In 2018, these moths increased a lot in south-west England. They are interesting because they can live in many parts of a home.

The way these moths cause trouble is through their larvae. These are the baby moths. The larvae eat animal fibers like silk, wool, fur, and hair. They can digest a material called keratin. Keratin is the stuff that makes up those animal fibers. This allows them to eat many human-made clothes. They can also chew through paper to reach book bindings or mold. They do not eat the paper for food, but they chew through it to find nourishment.

Many different things can start an infestation in a house. A single rug or piece of clothing can cause a problem. They also like to eat upholstery and soft toys. Some moths even eat taxidermied animals. You might find them in pet hair or fur buildup. They can live in vents, air ducts, or even bird nests. Most moths like to stay in basements or attics. These dark places are common spots for them to hide.

People use many ways to control these moths. Some use pheromone traps to catch them. These traps use scents to attract the moths. You must pick the right trap for the right species. You can also clean things with a strong vacuum. Washing clothes in hot water for 20 to 30 minutes kills the eggs. Another way is to freeze clothes in sealed bags. You should leave them in the freezer for a fortnight. A fortnight is 14 days. This kills the adults, the eggs, and the larvae.

Taking care of old fabrics is a big job. People who look after heritage collections must be very careful. They check the undersides of chairs often. They move and vacuum all furniture once every month. It is also good to shake out textiles every month. Checking attics and chimneys can help too. This is like keeping a garden free of weeds. If you stay ahead of them, your clothes stay safe.
